And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:11
You are my beloved
Mark's gospel does not begin with Jesus' birth, but with his baptism. When God's Son is immersed in the water and then arises out of this water, heaven is opened. A dove descends as a sign of the Spirit of love and joy and peace. The voice of a proud Father is heard, 'You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.' This is how Mark points to Jesus as the Son who, together with the Father and the Spirit, has come to bring heaven on earth. When we look at this, we are invited not to be spectators, but participants. We get to hear as well, "You are my beloved!' This is how the kingdom of heaven comes near! Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me, as God's beloved, to participate in the coming of your kingdom on earth as in heaven. Read: Mark 1:9-20
